Enhanced Weathering Using Basalt Rock Powder: Carbon Sequestration, Co-benefits and Risks in a Mesocosm Study With Solanum tuberosum

چکیده

Enhanced weathering (EW) of silicate rocks can remove CO 2 from the atmosphere, while potentially delivering co-benefits for agriculture (e.g., reduced nitrogen losses, increased yields). However, quantification inorganic carbon sequestration through EW and potential risks in terms heavy metal contamination have rarely been assessed. Here, we investigate a mesocosm experiment with Solanum tuberosum growing on alkaline soil. Amendment 50 t basalt/ha significantly alkalinity soil pore water leachate indicating significant basalt weathering. We did not find change TIC, which was likely because duration (99 days) too short carbonate precipitation to become detectable. A 1D reactive transport model (PHREEQC) predicted 0.77 /ha sequestered over 99 days 1.83 4.48 after 1 5 years, respectively. Comparison experimental modeled cation Mg concentrations at onset this showed factor three underestimation by hence indicates an sequestration. Moreover, Ca were underestimated, that calcite rate overestimated model. Importantly, amendment negatively affect potato growth yield (which even tended increase), despite Al availability Soil Ni upon addition, but levels remained below regulatory environmental quality standards leachates plant tissues increase. Last, decreased leaching, provide benefits environment.

Carbon Sequestration, Co-Benefits, and Conservation Programs

Land use changes to sequester carbon also provide “co-benefits,” some of which (for example, water quality) have attracted at least as much attention as carbon storage. The non-separability of these co-benefits presents a challenge for policy design. If carbon markets are employed, then social efficiency will depend on how we take into account co-benefits, that is, externalities, in such market...

Carbon dioxide sequestration in deep-sea basalt.

Developing a method for secure sequestration of anthropogenic carbon dioxide in geological formations is one of our most pressing global scientific problems. Injection into deep-sea basalt formations provides unique and significant advantages over other potential geological storage options, including (i) vast reservoir capacities sufficient to accommodate centuries-long U.S. production of fossi...

Climate change mitigation: potential benefits and pitfalls of enhanced rock weathering in tropical agriculture.

Restricting future global temperature increase to 2°C or less requires the adoption of negative emissions technologies for carbon capture and storage. We review the potential for deployment of enhanced weathering (EW), via the application of crushed reactive silicate rocks (such as basalt), on over 680 million hectares of tropical agricultural and tree plantations to offset fossil fuel CO2 emis...

Basalt weathering across scales

Weathering of silicate minerals impacts many geological and ecological processes. For example, the weathering of basalt contributes significantly to consumption of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and must be included in global calculations of such consumption over geological timeframes. Here we compare weathering advance rates for basalt (wD β ), where D and β indicate the scale at which the r...
